A young McDonald’s employee claims she faced harassment for shifts, sparking outrage.
West Midlands: So, there’s this young girl who just started working at McDonald’s, right? She says her manager told her to “suck it up” after he allegedly asked for sex in exchange for shifts. Can you believe that?
It turns out, over 700 current and former employees have come forward with similar claims. They say that some senior managers have been preying on young female workers. It’s really disturbing.
One ex-employee, Claire, shared her story. She was just 17 and on a zero-hours contract when her manager, who was in his 30s, made those inappropriate demands. She felt so uncomfortable that she had to leave her job.
Another woman, Shelby, also spoke out. She started working at a Berkshire branch when she was just 16 and faced constant harassment. She described how colleagues would grope her and make unwanted comments. It’s just awful.
McDonald’s UK chief, Alistair Macrow, recently testified about these allegations. This comes after he had to apologize last year for similar issues. He promised to improve conditions for staff, but it seems like things haven’t changed much.
They even brought in outside consultants to check on staff wellbeing. A spokesperson mentioned that they take any failures seriously and are constantly reviewing their procedures. But with all these claims, it’s hard to see real change happening.
Liam Byrne, who chairs the Business Select Committee, called the situation “appalling.” He pointed out a clear pattern of abuse and said it’s incredibly serious. It’s frustrating to see that promises made last year haven’t led to any real solutions.
