A police officer has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a moped rider in Enfield through careless driving while responding to an emergency call
Enfield: A police officer is in hot water after admitting he accidentally killed a moped rider while rushing to an emergency. Ian Brotherton, 32, was driving way too fast—47mph in a 30mph zone—when he hit 26-year-old Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes.
This tragic incident happened on October 12, 2023, when Brotherton’s police car, lights and sirens blaring, ran a red light on Southbury Road. Mr. Guedes was turning right into Baird Road when the crash occurred. Sadly, he was taken to the hospital but passed away the next day.
After an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, charges were brought against Brotherton. He denied causing death by dangerous driving but admitted to the lesser charge of careless driving.
The prosecutor, Michelle Heeley KC, accepted his plea and mentioned that Mr. Guedes’s family in Brazil had been consulted about it. The judge, Nigel Lickley KC, has postponed sentencing until February 27, and while Brotherton remains on bail, he’s banned from driving in the meantime.
The judge made it clear that all sentencing options are still on the table, including possible jail time. It’s a serious situation, and everyone is waiting to see what happens next.
