Enfield: A tragic incident unfolded when a Metropolitan Police officer, Ian Brotherton, hit a moped rider named Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes. This happened while Brotherton was responding to an emergency call.

He was speeding at 47mph in a 30mph zone and ran a red light on Southbury Road. Cristopher, just 26 years old, was turning right when the collision occurred.

Sadly, Cristopher was rushed to the hospital but passed away the next day. Brotherton faced charges after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

In court, he denied the more serious charge of dangerous driving but admitted to careless driving. The prosecution accepted his plea, noting that Cristopher’s family in Brazil had been consulted.

The judge has postponed sentencing until February 27, reminding Brotherton that all sentencing options, including jail time, are still on the table. For now, he’s out on bail but can’t drive.
