Enfield: A Metropolitan Police officer is in hot water after a tragic incident. PC Ian Brotherton, 32, admitted to causing the death of a moped rider, Cristopher De Carvalho Guedes, 26, while responding to an emergency call.

Brotherton was speeding at 47mph in a 30mph zone when his police van hit Guedes. The van had its lights and sirens on and ran a red light before the crash on October 12, 2023.

After the collision, Brotherton stopped and first aid was given, but sadly, Guedes passed away the next day in the hospital. Following the incident, Brotherton was put on restricted duties while an independent investigation took place.

Charges were filed against him after the investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). He denied causing death by dangerous driving but admitted to the lesser charge of careless driving.

The prosecutor confirmed that Guedes’s family in Brazil was consulted about the plea. The judge has postponed sentencing until February 27, leaving all options, including jail time, on the table.

After the hearing, a Scotland Yard official expressed sympathy for Guedes’s family, acknowledging the pain they are enduring. She emphasized that police drivers are trained to high standards and must be accountable for their actions.

Now that the criminal case is over, Brotherton will also face a misconduct hearing. It’s a tough situation all around, and the family is left grieving a tragic loss.
