A Michelin-starred chef faced a life-altering accident in Birmingham, leading to severe injuries and a long recovery journey
Birmingham: A Michelin-starred chef named Matt Davies had a terrifying accident while prepping for lunch. At 56, he was electrocuted by a shocking 32 amps, which caused severe damage to his arm.
After the incident, he was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he underwent a staggering 70 surgeries over three weeks. Sadly, the accident led to the amputation of his left arm, leaving him with chronic pain that he describes as horrendous.
Matt, who had a successful 40-year career running six restaurants, shared how the accident changed his life. He said, “It blew my arm to pieces. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it.”
Despite the challenges, he’s been incredibly brave. He’s had to deal with countless infections and even nearly lost his life after a surgery in 2022. The decision to amputate was heartbreaking for him, but he’s found strength in his family and his doctor, who he credits with saving his life.
Now, Matt is turning his experience into something positive. He’s hosting charity dinners with other Michelin-star chefs to raise money for organizations that helped him during his recovery. He’s already raised significant funds and has more events planned.
His wife, Tina, says that at these dinners, she sees her husband come back to life. Matt finds it emotional but rewarding to give back. He knows he might need more surgeries in the future, but he remains hopeful and encourages others to seek help when times get tough.
