A mother passed away feeling ashamed of her son, who committed robbery and burglary, leaving her embarrassed in their community
Manchester: A heart-wrenching story unfolded when a thief named Mark Schofield robbed a 67-year-old woman. He attacked her from behind while she was using a walking stick, snatching her handbag and leaving her injured.
The poor woman suffered serious injuries, including fractures to her knee, shoulder, and ankle. Schofield, 38, was also involved in burglaries at two flats in the same complex where his mother lived. It turns out she had even sought a restraining order against him before she passed away.
In a statement, she expressed her embarrassment and shame over his actions, knowing that everyone in her building was talking about her. Judge Nicholas Dean KC, who sentenced Schofield to over five years in prison, highlighted the tragic reality that his mother died feeling ashamed of him.
On February 9 last year, the victim was just walking to the shops when Schofield approached her. Despite her attempts to fight back, she fell, and he made off with her bag. Her son tried to chase him but lost sight of him, although the bag was later found nearby.
After the attack, the woman was hospitalized and underwent surgery, spending five weeks recovering. She had lived in Clayton for 20 years without feeling unsafe until this incident. Despite everything, she remains hopeful about the goodness in people and wants justice served properly.
Schofield’s criminal activities didn’t stop there. Just weeks before the robbery, he had burglarized two flats in the same elderly complex, stealing items like a laptop and cash. His defense claimed his actions were impulsive and linked to past trauma, but the judge believed it was all about his drug addiction.
Ultimately, Schofield pleaded guilty to robbery and two counts of burglary, receiving a sentence of five years and three months in prison. It’s a sad situation all around, especially for the victim and his late mother.
