A mounted officer injured during a Black Lives Matter protest is suing the Met Police for over £200,000 due to negligence claims.
London: A mounted police officer is taking legal action after a serious incident during a Black Lives Matter protest. Nicky Vernon, 47, was injured when her horse, Rocky, bolted. This happened in June 2020 when some protesters threw flares and fireworks.
She ended up with a punctured lung, a head injury, and several fractures. It was a tough situation, and she’s now suing the Metropolitan Police for over £200,000, claiming they didn’t keep her safe.
Vernon argues that her horse had a history of being unsafe and that the police put her in a risky situation by sending her into a chaotic crowd. There’s even footage showing the moment she was thrown off her horse after hitting a traffic light.
After the fall, she spent eight days in the hospital and is still dealing with anxiety and PTSD more than four years later. She shared how grateful she was for the support she received while recovering.
Ken Marsh, a former Met Police Federation chairman, praised her and her colleagues as heroes. The police have been asked for their side of the story, but it’s clear this incident has had a lasting impact on Vernon.
