The grieving mother of Kelyan Bokassa, a 14-year-old stabbing victim, calls for an end to violence after visiting the site of her son’s tragic death.
Woolwich: The heartbroken mum of 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa visited the spot where he was killed and made a powerful plea: “This has to stop.”
Mary Bokassa was in tears as she looked at the flowers and notes left for her son at the bus stop. Just two days earlier, medics had tried to save him after he was stabbed on a bus, but sadly, he didn’t make it.
As the police search for Kelyan’s attackers, Mary shared her pain with the Mirror. She said, “It’s really hard, but I wanted to come here. It’s nice that so many people are saying positive things about my son. These black people who die on the streets, it’s not fair, this has to stop.”
Mary reflected on how Kelyan turned to rap to express his feelings. He was a talented young man who faced many challenges. She mentioned how the care system had a huge impact on him, taking away his passion and identity.
She proudly read some of the heartfelt notes left for Kelyan, including one from a mother who expressed her sorrow and shared how respectful and kind Kelyan was. It was clear he made a lasting impression on those who met him.
Mary also spoke about the struggles Kelyan faced, including being taken into care and the impact of gangs on his life. He had just returned to school after the break and was on his way to meet social workers when he was attacked.
Just before his death, Kelyan posted a chilling message on Instagram, asking if anyone had a knife. His tragic death came just months after his friend was also killed nearby.
Witnesses reported seeing two boys fleeing the scene, one with a large machete. A local manager even saw CCTV footage of them running away, which raised concerns about their age and the violence in the area.
As the community mourns, Mary’s call for change resonates deeply. She wants to see an end to the violence that has taken her son and too many others.
