Plans for new apartments in Blackpool could soon transform the skyline
Blackpool: Exciting news for residents! There are plans to turn the old Woolworths building into new apartments right by the Promenade. Developers want to create 65 one and two-bedroom flats in that iconic art deco structure.
This building has a bit of history. It was last home to Sports Direct, and the ground floor has a Wetherspoons pub called The Albert and The Lion. Woolworths opened this place back in 1938, and it’s been a part of the community ever since.
Initially, the managing director of ALB Group, which bought the building, hinted at turning the upper floors into a hotel. But now, they’ve submitted plans to Blackpool Council for self-contained flats, which could speed up the approval process.
The proposal includes 10 two-bedroom flats and 55 one-bedroom options, all accessible from the existing entrance. They’re not planning to change the building’s exterior, which is nice to hear.
Even though it’s right above a busy pub in a tourist hotspot, the planning statement claims future residents won’t face major noise issues. They did a noise assessment and found that with some secondary glazing on certain windows, it should be just fine.
There won’t be any parking included, but that’s pretty standard for town center projects. They mentioned that residents might find parking on nearby streets.
The application is now in the hands of the town hall planners, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens next!
