The New Beginnings project at Merkinch Hall invites locals to enjoy warm chats and community spirit.
The New Beginnings project at Merkinch Hall is all about bringing people together and tackling loneliness. It’s a drop-in spot where folks can connect and share stories over a cuppa.
This initiative is part of Rokzkool Academy, a charity that started with a focus on building confidence and friendships through music.
Rod Shannon and Kay Ewen, who run Rokzkool, previously operated from Merkinch Hall before moving to a new location in Eastgate Shopping Centre. They realized the hall was perfect for continuing their mission, especially after providing essential food and emergency packs during the pandemic.
Inverness Provost Glynis Campbell Sinclair recently visited the New Beginnings project, where volunteers like Tesco Community Champion Liz Sutherland are making a difference. Liz runs drop-in sessions on Fridays and Saturdays and also helps with a craft club on Tuesdays.
She mentioned that while the new studio is fantastic, it’s not as suitable for the older crowd who used to frequent the hall. They wanted to keep that community spirit alive at Merkinch Hall.
The hall is warm and cozy, making it an ideal spot for seniors to enjoy a cuppa and meet new friends. Monthly bingo sessions have been a hit, and there are plans for outings, lunch clubs, and barbecues.
There’s even a lovely walled garden at the back, with hopes of starting a garden club in the spring. Liz is eager to get more volunteers involved to expand their activities.
The sessions at Merkinch Hall will kick off again on January 10, welcoming everyone on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and the craft club on Tuesdays from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy each other’s company!
