Warrington will introduce weekly food waste collections starting April 2026, enhancing recycling efforts and meeting new regulations.
Warrington: The council is gearing up to roll out a new food waste collection service starting April 1, 2026. They’re planning to buy food waste caddies to help residents manage their waste better.
The idea is to have weekly collections, which means residents will have three bins at home. If you subscribe to green bin collections, you’ll have four.
This change is part of the Environment Act 2021, which requires local councils to provide a weekly food waste collection for all homes.
The council’s report mentions that each home will get a 5L kitchen caddy and a larger 23/25L caddy for outside. Residents will just need to put these out for collection each week.
They’re also aware that it can be tricky to offer this service to flats and communal living spaces. So, they’re looking at using larger bins for those areas.
Warrington Borough Council has secured a hefty grant of £1,863,566 from DEFRA to help kickstart this food waste collection service.
The plan is to roll out the caddies in phases to keep things organized and efficient.
There are about 98,000 homes in Warrington, including all sorts of properties from detached houses to flats.
To get started, they’ll order 60,000 caddies, with another 15,000 to follow in the next few months to ensure everyone gets what they need.
