London: So, there’s some big news about people smugglers in the UK. The government is rolling out new laws that could really shake things up. They’re looking to hit suspected smugglers with travel bans and even restrict their phone use. Sounds serious, right?
The Home Office is stepping up its game. They want to make it tougher for these suspects to operate. Under the new rules, they could be banned from using laptops or phones, and even from hanging out with certain people. It’s all about keeping a closer eye on them.
Right now, there are already some orders in place to limit the movement of these suspects. But the government thinks they’re not being used enough. So, they’re planning to introduce new “interim” orders that can be slapped on quickly while the courts figure things out.
Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, is really pushing for this. She’s been vocal about how these smugglers are taking advantage of the system and putting lives at risk. She’s determined to give law enforcement the tools they need to tackle these gangs head-on.
Interestingly, police and other agencies will be able to go straight to the High Court for these orders, skipping the usual steps. If someone breaks one of these interim orders, they could be looking at up to five years in prison. That’s a hefty penalty!
The government is also tying this change to their broader plans for border security and immigration reform. They’re hoping to get this legislation through Parliament soon, especially since there’s been a noticeable rise in the number of migrants crossing the English Channel.
With the weather getting better, more people are trying to make the crossing. Last year, over 36,000 people made that journey, and it looks like this year could be even busier. The government is feeling the pressure to act, and these new laws are part of their response.
