Plans to revamp the Moffat Woollen Mill could boost local jobs and tourism
Moffat: Exciting plans are in the works for the Moffat Woollen Mill. They want to expand the mill and add a new car park. This could mean more jobs and a lot more visitors to the town.
The mill and the old Mercury Inn site are owned by Equorium Property Company. They run the woollen mill as part of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill brand, which has over 20 sites.
Just before Christmas, they submitted plans to the Dumfries and Galloway Council. They aim to turn the old hotel site into a car park and upgrade the current one for coaches and disabled parking.
They also want to add a new entrance to the mill, electric vehicle charging points, and an outdoor seating area. Plus, they’re looking to improve access for cyclists and walkers.
According to their documents, the goal is to make the area look better and improve visitor facilities. They want to meet what the local community expressed in their action plans.
The main aim is to boost visitor numbers, especially those coming to Moffat on long-distance coach trips.
The site currently attracts over 250,000 visitors a year, including many from abroad. Last year, around 3,500 coaches brought in about 130,000 passengers.
However, coach visits have been declining, so EPC believes that redeveloping the mill is crucial for its future. They hope to bring in an additional 65,000 visitors.
This project represents a significant investment in the Moffat area, which will help secure the mill’s long-term future and support the local economy.
VisitScotland is backing the scheme, highlighting the mill’s importance as a tourist attraction. They believe that upgrading visitor facilities could really boost the local economy and help promote responsible tourism.
If the project gets approved, VisitScotland looks forward to collaborating with the Moffat Mill team to enhance the visitor experience and showcase the beauty of the South of Scotland.
