In light of a recent attack, the mayor aims to enhance security plans for the upcoming Super Bowl in New Orleans
New Orleans: A recent terror attack has the city’s mayor on high alert as she seeks expert security advice ahead of the Super Bowl.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced over the weekend that she wants a “tactical expert” to assess the city’s security measures before Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome.
She mentioned, “We need an expert in New Orleans this week to review our plans that we’ve been working on for months.” This includes checking if the new bollards are strong enough to protect the public.
On New Year’s Day, a man drove his truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, tragically killing fourteen people. The attacker was shot by police at the scene.
In response to the attack, Cantrell is not only hiring a security expert but also installing new traffic-blocking bollards on Bourbon Street.
She held a press conference to discuss these measures, emphasizing the need for thorough security analysis before the big game.
However, some experts have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the new bollards, suggesting they may not withstand a truck attack like the one that occurred.
Cantrell acknowledged that the bollard installation is still a work in progress and is committed to ensuring public safety for both the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras.
She stated that the security review will determine if the bollards are adequate, saying, “An expert will be able to assess this, and we’ll take action based on their findings.”
While she didn’t disclose who the expert would be, she assured the public that their credentials would be credible.
