A horrific attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day has left 15 dead and many injured, raising concerns about safety and security.
New Orleans: What a way to start the year, huh? Early on New Year’s Day, chaos erupted in the French Quarter when a truck, waving an Islamic State flag, plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street. It’s just heartbreaking—15 people lost their lives, and around 30 others were hurt.
President Biden mentioned that the FBI found the suspect had posted some pretty disturbing videos online, showing he was inspired by ISIS and had a desire to kill. The guy, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove his Ford pickup into the crowd and then got out, firing at police officers. Two officers were injured before they shot him down.
To make things worse, there were also two homemade bombs found nearby that thankfully didn’t go off. It’s just a nightmare scenario. Jabbar, a 42-year-old from Texas, had served in the Army for 13 years, including a stint in Afghanistan. Authorities are now looking into whether he had any accomplices.
As for the victims, local media have identified some of them. An 18-year-old girl from Gulfport, a father of two from Baton Rouge, a former football player, and a mother from Metairie were among those who tragically lost their lives. It’s just so sad to think about their families.
