A newborn baby was safely rescued from a migrant dinghy near Lanzarote, Spain, shortly after being born during the perilous journey.
Lanzarote: A baby boy made his entrance into the world on a crowded dinghy heading to Spain’s Canary Islands. It all happened on January 6, right when Spain was celebrating the Epiphany holiday.
The dinghy was spotted off Lanzarote, and the Spanish coast guard quickly jumped into action. They found the mother and her newborn in good health, along with 60 other migrants on board.
Domingo Trujillo, the captain of the rescue ship, shared that they were aware of a pregnant woman on the dinghy. But the real surprise was finding a completely naked baby who had just been born moments before they arrived.
The mother was lying on the floor of the boat, and someone nearby was holding the baby. Trujillo took the little one in his arms, comforting him to stop his cries.
Medics on the rescue vessel recommended that both the mother and baby be taken to a hospital by helicopter. Alvaro Serrano Perez, the helicopter commander, said it was the best gift they could have received on Three Kings Day.
The Canary Islands are facing a significant challenge with a surge in irregular migrants, mainly from Mali, Senegal, and Morocco. In 2024, they recorded a staggering 46,843 arrivals, making up 73% of illegal migration to Spain.
