A Newcastle man has been sentenced to five years after children discovered a loaded gun while playing in the Byker area
Newcastle: A 22-year-old guy named Ali Abdughari-Abud got himself into serious trouble. He was caught after kids, aged nine to eleven, stumbled upon a loaded gun while playing in Byker back in May 2023.
When the police looked into it, they found a video on his phone showing the same gun. It was a pretty wild discovery! Thankfully, those kids didn’t get hurt.
After some forensic testing, it turned out the gun and its ammo were both functional. Abdughari-Abud, who lives in Shieldfield, faced the music at Newcastle Crown Court. He admitted to having the firearm and ammo without a license.
On December 20, he was sentenced to five years in prison. Detective Sergeant David Wylam from Northumbria Police praised the teamwork that led to this outcome, saying it made the community safer.
He emphasized that firearms have no place in neighborhoods and expressed relief that the kids were unharmed. It’s a serious reminder of how important it is to keep our streets safe.
