A Newry charity is stepping up legal action to save Max, a dog they believe was wrongly labeled as a pit bull by the local council
Newry: A local animal welfare charity is really upset with how Lisburn and Castlereagh Council is handling a case about a dog named Max. They think he’s been wrongly labeled as a pit bull terrier.
Max has been held by the council since December 2024 under some strict breed laws. Because of this, he could face being put down, which is just heartbreaking.
To help save him, a GoFundMe page was set up and it’s raised over £10,000! The page mentions that even though councillors wanted an independent assessment for Max, the council turned it down.
Instead, they had a police officer assess Max, which the charity believes was a biased choice. They feel this was unfair and didn’t give Max a real chance.
The charity is now looking at legal options to challenge the council’s decision. They want to make sure Max gets a fair shot at freedom.
Nora Smith, the CEO of the USPCA, expressed her disappointment with the council’s lack of cooperation. She said people are really worried about Max and how the council is handling everything.
While the charity is still trying to help Max, they feel they have no choice but to take legal action. It’s a tough situation, but they’re determined to fight for him.
