Ayr: The historic Newton Tower is getting some much-needed TLC. The building, which has been around since 1795, is being treated with a new lime-based render. This replaces the old cement that was in pretty bad shape.

Work kicked off back in August. They’re removing the faulty cement render and prepping the sandstone for a fresh finish with breathable masonry paint. It’s all about keeping the tower looking good and lasting longer.

Scaffolding is up around the tower, which means some roads nearby are feeling the pinch. The work paused for the holidays to help out drivers and local shops during the busy shopping season.

But don’t worry, the repairs are set to start back up on Monday, January 6. Just a heads up, temporary traffic restrictions will kick in again around Main Street and King Street on Sunday, January 5.

On King Street, if you’re heading west towards Main Street, the lane closest to the tower will be closed. But you can still turn left or right at Main Street. If you’re coming from the east, the lane by the tower will be closed up to the roundabout, so you’ll need to stick to the left lane.

Drivers on Main Street, with Aldi on your left, will see the right lane outside the supermarket closed. If you’re continuing on Main Street or turning right onto King Street, you’ll use the same lane.

For those coming towards the tower on Main Street, the inside lane and footpath will be closed. All traffic will turn left from the middle lane onto King Street, but don’t worry, the bus lane is still open for buses.

South Ayrshire Council mentioned earlier this year that the whole project is expected to cost around £134,000. So, hang in there, Ayr! The tower will be looking great soon.
