Noah’s Ark Zoo invites the community to donate old Christmas trees for animal enrichment activities
North Somerset: The zoo is asking folks to drop off their old Christmas trees. They’ll use them to enrich the lives of the animals.
Over the last five years, Noah’s Ark Zoo has taken in around 15,000 trees. That’s a lot of holiday cheer for the animals!
Some trees will be turned into chippings for the spectacled bears, who love the pine scent. Rhinos also enjoy foraging through the trees.
And let’s not forget the African bull elephants! They’ll munch on the branches and have a blast exploring the trees.
The elephants really enjoy tossing the trees around, too. It’s like a fun game for them!
Chris Wilkinson, the zoo’s curator, mentioned that these trees make a big difference for the animals. They get to experience new smells and textures.
He explained that the elephants’ habitat is mostly sand, so they can bury the trees and create a mini forest for them to explore.
They’ll eat some, throw them around, and search for hidden treats. Sounds like a good time!
This initiative has really taken off since it started in 2021. In 2024 alone, about 3,000 people brought their trees to the zoo.
Mr. Wilkinson said it’s great to see the community getting involved. The zoo is now officially partnered with North Somerset Council.
They’re making a real effort to help the community and become a hub for these kinds of activities.
If you want to donate your tree, the zoo has a drop-off point in the car park until January 26. So, don’t miss out!
