A couple from Haringey has been fined and received a criminal record for using a lost Blue Badge to dodge parking fees
Haringey: So, there’s this couple who got themselves in a bit of trouble. They were fined £785 and now have a criminal record for using a family member’s Blue Badge to skip out on parking fees.
The council got suspicious when they spotted the badge, which was reported lost, on a car near Tottenham’s ground. They slapped a Penalty Charge Notice on it and towed the vehicle right away.
Turns out, the badge actually belonged to the husband’s father, who wasn’t even at the game. The couple tried to pull a fast one by giving false info to the council, but it didn’t work out for them.
They ended up in court, where they both pleaded guilty. The husband got fined £212, while the wife had to cough up £573. Now they’ve got a criminal record to boot.
Cllr Seema Chandwani spoke out about it, saying that Blue Badge owners deserve their benefits. She emphasized that misuse of these badges takes away from those who genuinely need them.
She also mentioned that the council is serious about cracking down on this kind of fraud and will keep taking action against anyone who tries to game the system.
