Durham: The Northern train operator has been busy giving back to the community. They recently awarded £500 grants to 21 different community groups across the North of England. How cool is that?

These grants came about thanks to nominations from Northern’s 7,000 employees. It’s great to see the staff getting involved and supporting local initiatives.

The funds are set to help with ongoing activities in these projects. In County Durham, some of the lucky recipients include Activity Den in Tanfield Lea, Dad Social North East in Durham, Pelton Youth Project in Chester-Le-Street, and the Youth Practitioner Service across the area.

Carolyn Watson, who’s in charge of stakeholder and community engagement at Northern, mentioned that these grants are all about backing local causes. She pointed out that their employees know best which groups can really make a difference.

With a total of £10,000 in grants, these funds will help small, local groups do meaningful work in their communities. It’s all about making a real impact!

On top of the £500 grants, there were also individual project grants awarded. This isn’t the first time Northern has stepped up to support community projects, either.

Back in September 2024, they handed out £100,000 from their Customer & Community Improvement Fund to eleven projects aimed at boosting social mobility across their network. Pretty impressive, right?

Other groups in the North East and North Yorkshire that benefited include Encephalitis International in Newcastle, Hygiene Bank in York, Positility in Harrogate, and Walbottle Village Primary School in Newcastle. It’s heartwarming to see such support for local initiatives!
