A Northumbria Police officer was recorded speeding dangerously in Spennymoor, leading to serious legal consequences for his reckless behavior
Spennymoor: A Northumbria Police officer, Cameron Watson, was caught on camera zooming through two roundabouts before being pulled over. This all happened in the early hours while he was driving along the A688.
The 26-year-old was arrested after he sped past an unmarked police car, and the whole thing was recorded. The prosecutor, Lewis Kerr, pointed out that Watson was driving way too close to the other vehicle.
The footage showed him undertaking the police car and speeding off. Once the police activated their lights and sirens, he finally pulled over after hitting nearly 120mph.
Judge Jonathan Carroll reviewed the video before sentencing Watson. He noted that it was particularly concerning since Watson was a serving officer on duty that night.
The judge mentioned that everyone has moments when they want to get home quickly, but very few would drive at such reckless speeds. He emphasized how dangerous it was, not just for Watson but for everyone else on the road.
The judge also pointed out a sense of entitlement in Watson’s actions, suggesting he felt above the law because he was a police officer. Watson, who used to live in Newton Aycliffe, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving last August.
His lawyer, Elisha Marsay, argued that one mistake shouldn’t define his entire life. She described the incident as a moment of sheer stupidity.
In the end, Watson received a community order, was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work, and was banned from driving for a year. He will also face a police disciplinary hearing due to his conviction.
