Footfall has dropped significantly since the new Grand Central Station opened nearby
Belfast: The closure of the Great Victoria Street transport hub has really affected foot traffic. Since the new Grand Central Station opened, many businesses are feeling the pinch.
One trader mentioned an 80% drop in sales, which is pretty tough. But some shop owners are hopeful that the new market planned for the old station site will bring customers back.
Giuseppe Micciche, who runs Nica Nica cafe, is one of those optimistic folks. He opened his cafe just a couple of months ago and is excited about the new market. He’s been sharing photos of his delicious Sicilian treats on social media to attract more customers.
Even though foot traffic is low now, he believes things will pick up once the market opens. He’s confident that in a few months, the place will be buzzing with activity.
Navid Hemd, who runs a mobile accessory stand, has also felt the impact. He said it’s been really quiet since the station closed. People mostly come by for parking or to ask about the new station.
He pointed out that many businesses around him have shut down, and he estimates foot traffic is down to just 20% of what it used to be. It’s a tough situation for everyone.
Nallaine Calvo, who operates a Filipino eatery called Kubo, is also hopeful. She opened her place just before Christmas and believes the new market will bring life back to the area.
She’s heard that the market is set to open around April or May, and they’re already working on it. Nallaine is excited about the changes coming to the neighborhood.
While foot traffic isn’t what it used to be, she’s grateful for her loyal customers and the buzz around Filipino food. It’s a bit of a struggle, but she’s optimistic about the future.
Another shop, Ziggicig, is still seeing decent foot traffic. Sasha, who works there, mentioned that business is steady, and she’s hopeful the new market will make a big difference.
It sounds like the first steps for the new market are already underway, which could really help revitalize the area and connect it with the Grand Central Station.
