A tiny otter cub, Frosty, rescued from a frozen puddle in Lincolnshire, is thriving thanks to North Devon charities and expert care, after a near death experience.
A farmer in Lincolnshire found him. Frosty was almost dead when discovered. He weighed only 800 grams. Wild Things Rescue cared for him first. They knew he needed special help.
They contacted the UK Wild Otter Trust. The Trust is located in Umberleigh. Frosty is now thriving there. He now weighs a healthy 1.5 kilograms.
Dave Webb founded the Devon charity. He said Frosty’s survival was unlikely. Dave said they get many rescue calls. Often, cubs die before they can help.
Frosty was frozen in a puddle. They thought he would not live. He is a fighter though. The Trust has a volunteer network. They transport cubs to North Devon.
The Trust helps other rescue groups too. They ensure the best outcome for otters. Otters are often hurt or abandoned. This is due to traffic and habitat loss.
Frosty stayed a month with the charity. He is ready to meet another cub. This will help him survive later. He will be released in about a year.
Another cub got rescued, named Steph. They are the perfect age to pair them. They will stay together with little help.
They will learn otter behavior from each other. This is what they’d learn from their mom naturally. The charity relies on donations. They need community support to keep working.
