A gas outage affecting over 3,000 homes in North London is expected to last until the weekend due to flooding in the gas pipes
North London: So, there’s been a bit of a mess with gas supplies in North London. Over 3,000 homes are affected because of a gas outage. It all started on Sunday when a water main burst, flooding the gas pipes in areas like Muswell Hill, Colney Hatch, and Hornsey.
Even though the leak was fixed, the water in the gas pipes has left many homes and businesses without gas. Some streets are even seeing water in their gas meters, which is messing with appliances.
They’ve sent over 100 engineers to sort this out. The first thing they did was turn off the gas supply at each property. But they can’t say how long it’ll take to fix everything since it depends on how much water got into the system.
Cadent mentioned that just a tiny bit of water—like an egg cup full—can block a service pipe. Once they get all the water out, they can start bringing the gas back. But first, they need to check every property to make sure it’s safe.
Stephanie van Rosse from Cadent said they have to visit each affected home to ensure everything is switched off properly. After that, they’ll start pumping the water out. But again, they can’t predict how long it’ll take.
They’re expecting this situation to drag on into the weekend. Engineers from all over are coming in to help get people back on gas as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, they’re going door-to-door to turn off gas supplies, and residents are asked not to try to do it themselves. Cadent is also coordinating with UK Power Network to keep the electricity running smoothly during this mess. For updates, you can check their website.
