New York City: A subway passenger was critically hurt after a stranger pushed him onto the tracks. It all happened at the 18th Street station on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, a 45-year-old man, was just standing there, probably looking at his phone, when a 23-year-old named Kamel Hawkins suddenly shoved him. He fell right under the train but somehow survived.

Firefighters rushed in to pull him out, and a bystander couldn’t believe it, shouting, “He’s alive, he’s alive.” He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Security cameras caught the whole thing, but police are still trying to figure out why Hawkins did it. He’s now facing serious charges, including attempted murder and second-degree assault.

This guy has a pretty long criminal history. Back in 2019, he was charged for attacking a police officer, and just last year, he faced charges for assault and having a weapon.

Emergency crews were on the scene quickly after the attack. This incident is part of a worrying trend of random attacks on the subway, which saw over a billion passengers in 2024.

Just recently, a woman was set on fire while sleeping on a train, and sadly, she didn’t make it. Her name was Debrina Kawam, and she had been living in a shelter after some tough times.

The man charged with her murder, Sebastian Zapeta, allegedly watched as she burned. He’s set to appear in court soon.

Just two days after the subway incident, another man slashed two people at Grand Central station, but thankfully, they survived.

At a press conference earlier that day, Mayor Eric Adams insisted that crime in the subway isn’t on the rise, despite these high-profile cases. He mentioned that overall crime rates are low.

Still, the city has decided to send over 1,000 National Guard members to patrol the subway during the busy holiday season. Plus, the Guardian Angels, a volunteer group, is back on patrol after a long break since 2020.
