Pembrokeshire: Samantha Ivy Barton has been making waves lately. She’s been shortlisted for a big award with her former racehorse, Up For An Oscar, who’s now called Ozzy. How cool is that?

They’re up for the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust RoR Community Impact Award because of their amazing work at Redberth Croft CIC. It’s a community farm and equine center that helps people in need.

Earlier this year, Samantha faced some tough times, including homelessness. But she turned her life around with Ozzy by her side. He’s a calm horse now, and together, they’re inspiring local kids.

As the farm manager, Samantha juggles her role at Redberth Croft with her job at a local agricultural supplier. She’s built a strong bond with Ozzy, who had a decent racing career with four wins.

Ozzy is more than just a horse; he helps people gain confidence and learn horsemanship skills. He’s a key part of Redberth Croft’s mission to support those who’ve faced challenges.

The RoR charity started this award last year to highlight how former racehorses can change lives. It’s all about recognizing those who make a difference in their communities.

Samantha is over the moon about being nominated. She said it’s hard to believe she’s come this far, especially since she only started a few years ago. Winning would mean the world to her.

Redberth Croft CIC was founded in 2019 by Daisy Coleman, who owns Ozzy. The organization focuses on helping veterans and others in Pembrokeshire and West Wales.

With a team of dedicated volunteers, they work hard to improve mental and physical health through nature-based activities. It’s all about giving back to the community.

This year’s nominations came from all over the racing and equestrian world, making it tough for the judges to pick the top three finalists.

Samantha and Ozzy are up against some strong competition, including Louise Robson and Forth Bridge from Buckinghamshire, and Grace Muir from HEROS Charity in Oxfordshire.

David Catlow from RoR said the nominations were outstanding, showing how versatile former racehorses can be in new roles. It’s all about their care and wellbeing.

The 2025 RoR Awards will be special since it’s the charity’s 25th anniversary. They’ve been committed to supporting former racehorses for a long time.

To celebrate, RoR Patron Zara Tindall will open the ceremony, highlighting the importance of their work.

Samantha and Ozzy are excited to be finalists for the RoR Community Impact Award. Zara Tindall expressed her excitement about attending the awards and celebrating the charity’s achievements.

The public can vote until January 10, so everyone can get involved. The winner will be announced at the RoR Awards at Cheltenham Racecourse on January 25.
