A petition is gaining traction to replace the Carnoustie footbridge set for demolition
Carnoustie: A petition has popped up to replace the railway footbridge that’s about to be torn down. The bridge, which connects Park Avenue to Links Parade, is being demolished because it’s considered a safety risk.
Network Rail says the bridge is too far gone to fix. They plan to finish the removal by January 24. In light of this, a local family has started an online petition asking for a new bridge to be built.
Emma Robinson and her son Bruno are leading the charge. They believe the bridge is vital for the community. Emma mentioned how many people use it daily and how great the views are from the top.
Bruno chimed in, saying it’s crucial for getting to the beach and leisure center. He really misses using it. Local councillors are backing their petition, too, which is great to see.
On December 23, the councillors learned about Network Rail’s plans. While there are other ways to cross the railway, like the Ferrier Street underbridge, they’re not ideal. Some councillors are worried about losing another access point.
David Cheape, one of the councillors, expressed concern that Network Rail seems intent on closing access routes, despite public pushback. He urged residents to make their voices heard during the consultation process.
He pointed out that the alternative underpasses are either unsafe or not accessible for everyone. It’s important for everyone to have safe access to the beach and the golf links, especially since they’re a big draw for tourists.
Angus Council is aware of the situation and is looking to discuss future infrastructure needs with Network Rail. A spokesperson from Network Rail acknowledged the inconvenience but stressed that safety comes first.
