Bacup: So, there’s some drama over a new pizza place trying to open up in town. The council said no way because of high obesity rates among kids.

Woody’s Pizza wanted to set up shop on St James Street, taking over the old café and wine bar. They already have spots in Hebden Bridge and Todmorden, but this one just didn’t fly.

The council’s decision popped up on their planning portal, and it’s all about the numbers. In the Greensclough ward, 20% of Year 6 kids are classified as obese, which is way above the 15% limit they have.

They also mentioned that having a takeaway there would mess with the living conditions of nearby residents. Apparently, they don’t want the noise and traffic from customers coming and going.

Plus, there are already 26 takeaways in Bacup, and the council thinks this one wouldn’t really add anything new to the mix. They felt the old wine bar was a better fit for the area.

Now, Woody’s did try to make a case for themselves by showing off their healthy menu options. They claim to focus on vegan and plant-based foods, saying they use fresh, local ingredients.

They even bragged about making their sauces and doughs in-house without all the junk you find in frozen foods. They really want people to know they care about what they serve.

So, it looks like Bacup will have to wait a bit longer for that new pizza joint. It’s a tough call, but the health of the kids seems to be the priority here.
