A pleasure flight in Yorkshire ended in a crash landing, leaving the pilot and passengers with minor injuries after hitting trees.
Driffield: So, there was this small plane that went down after taking off for a joyride. The pilot and two passengers got a bit banged up but nothing serious.
They had just lifted off from Eddsfield Airfield when the plane started climbing over some really tall trees. Unfortunately, it clipped the treetops and went down. The pilot tried to steer it through the trees to find a clear spot.
In the end, the plane landed in a garden and on a driveway, totally wrecked. Luckily, everyone managed to get out okay with just minor injuries.
The accident happened on June 18, 2024. According to the investigation, the pilot thinks a power issue or some gusty winds might have caused the crash. They didn’t find any clear signs of power loss, but there was a chance of ice building up in the carburettor.
The report mentioned that the long taxi on the grass runway might have led to that ice. The pilot said they’ll definitely pay more attention to wind conditions and obstacles like trees next time.
