Rosyth: They’re looking to get the go-ahead from Fife Council to change an old garage site on Kings Road. The plan is to turn it into a community growing area.

If all goes well, this space will feature a polytunnel, raised planting beds, and even storage for tools. There’ll be a workshop, meeting rooms, toilets, and new parking bays too.

According to their agent, Stephen Lynas from iDraw Plans, this project will help clean up the area. He mentioned that the land has been unused for years and has become a dumping ground.

The site is surrounded by Kings Road, Camdean Crescent, and the Brankholm Burn. It was last used by the council for storage but has since fallen into disrepair.

Sadly, it’s been plagued by fly-tipping, which is a real eyesore for the community.

Local councillor Brian Goodall even ran the Great Scottish Run in October to raise funds for a new base for Rosyth Men’s Shed. It’s a great initiative to support the community.

In the first six months, they hope to attract around 85 visitors, aiming for at least half to become regulars. They plan to gradually extend their opening hours as they grow.

Stephen also pointed out that there’s a long waiting list for allotments in southwest Fife. The community is eager for more growing spaces, especially after the success of the EATS Rosyth garden.

The polytunnel will allow for longer growing seasons and even activities like making Christmas wreaths. Local schools and community groups can also use the space for gardening-related activities.

Unfortunately, the site has been a dumping ground for too long. The Men’s Shed project is all about promoting well-being and healthy lifestyles for everyone, whether retired or still working.

The idea is to create a friendly place where people can engage in fun activities, meet others, and share skills. This can really help boost their self-esteem and mental health.

The Rosyth group started in January 2020 but has never had a proper base. They’ve been sharing space at EATS Rosyth’s orchard and currently use a spot in North Queensferry.

Both options aren’t sustainable long-term. Mr. Lynas emphasized that having a dedicated space in Rosyth has always been the goal.

They need a central, accessible location with a suitable building, and the vacant land on Kings Road is just the ticket.
