Met Police officers have been cleared of wrongdoing after shooting two dangerous dogs in Poplar, following an attack on a woman and her pet.
Poplar: So, there was this pretty intense situation in Poplar, London. The police had to shoot two dangerous dogs after they attacked a woman and her dog. It all went down on May 7, 2023, when the Metropolitan Police got called in.
The dogs, which were Cane Corsos, were owned by a guy named Louie Turnbull. He didn’t want to give them up, and there was a standoff that got caught on camera. Things got really tense when one of the dogs broke free and charged at a police dog handler. That’s when the officer had to take action and shot the dog.
The second dog was also shot after it managed to escape even after being Tasered. Turnbull himself got Tasered during the whole mess and ended up with a suspended prison sentence for a year.
After looking into everything, Scotland Yard said the Independent Office for Police Conduct found that the officers did everything right. They had a tough job trying to get Turnbull to hand over the dogs, especially after they had already attacked someone.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway mentioned that the officers showed a lot of restraint and bravery. They really tried to handle the situation without escalating it further. It’s a shame that it had to end the way it did, but safety was the priority.
The incident blew up on social media, with a lot of people upset about the dogs being shot. A petition even got over a million signatures calling for the officers to be held accountable. But in the end, it was Turnbull who faced the music for owning those out-of-control dogs.
The woman who got attacked had some leg injuries, and her dog was hurt too. It’s a tough situation all around, but the police were just trying to keep everyone safe.
