A report confirms police acted appropriately before a tragic e-bike accident in Salford, resulting in a teenager’s death
Salford: So, there was this really sad incident involving a 15-year-old boy named Saul Cookson. He was riding his e-bike when he got into a terrible crash with an ambulance. This happened on June 8, 2023, around 2 PM.
Saul was riding a Sur-Ron e-bike when the accident occurred on Langworthy Road. Sadly, he suffered serious injuries and passed away shortly after at the hospital.
After the crash, people left tributes near the spot where it happened. It’s heartbreaking to think about. An inquest jury later looked into the situation and found that the police officers had not actually chased him.
They had followed Saul for a short time, but he managed to slip past some bollards before hitting the ambulance. The police watchdog, the IOPC, investigated the whole thing after Greater Manchester Police referred it.
They concluded that while the police presence might have influenced how Saul rode, the officers didn’t do anything wrong. Their contact with him was really brief, just about 25 seconds before the crash.
According to the IOPC, the ambulance driver only had a split second to see Saul before the collision. The regional director of the IOPC expressed condolences, saying any loss of life is tragic.
Saul’s mom, Emma Frendo, shared how much he was loved, calling him the “sweetest, most kindest boy ever.” It’s just so sad to hear about such a young life lost.
