Wick: The toilet block on Whitechapel Road has been through quite a lot lately. It cost a whopping £395,000 to build, and now it’s getting some much-needed repairs after being vandalized just before Christmas.

The place has been shut down since the damage occurred, and Police Scotland is still looking into what happened. Meanwhile, Highland Council has sent a contractor to start fixing things up. They’re eager to reopen the toilets as soon as possible.

These toilets were supposed to be a big deal when they opened in July, with all sorts of upgrades like new fittings, showers, and even baby-changing facilities. They even installed CCTV to help keep an eye on things and prevent more trouble.

Unfortunately, the toilets had to close back in early 2020 due to previous vandalism. At a recent community council meeting, members discussed the situation and wanted updates from the local authority.

Community council chairman Allan Farquhar expressed concern over the damage, especially after all the money spent on security features. Another councillor, David Dunnett, speculated that someone might have propped the door open, leading to the damage.

Police were alerted to the vandalism on December 23, and a sign has been up ever since, letting folks know the building is closed. Highland Council leader Raymond Bremner called the vandalism a real shame, especially since it happened during such a busy time of year.

He’s hopeful that the new CCTV will help catch whoever did this. It’s just disappointing to see a facility meant for the community get targeted like this.
