A tragic incident in North Yorkshire claims the life of a police officer after she was hit by a lorry while assisting at a crash site
North Yorkshire: A police officer lost her life after being hit by a lorry while helping at another crash. It happened on the A19 at Bagby, close to Thirsk, on Saturday morning.
Rosie Prior, the officer, was on the roadside when she and two others were struck by a heavy goods vehicle just before 9 am. Sadly, both she and Ryan Welford, who was involved in the first crash, died at the scene.
A teenage boy who was in Ryan’s car was also hit and is now in the hospital, but he’s in serious yet stable condition. The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently out on bail.
North Yorkshire Police’s Chief Constable, Tim Forber, expressed deep sadness over the loss of Ms. Prior. He mentioned that they are doing everything possible to support her family and the family of Ryan Welford, who also tragically lost his life.
Ms. Prior joined the police force as a student officer in May 2022. Her family described her as a loving mum, wife, and sister, and they will miss her dearly.
Ryan’s family shared their grief too, calling him a hardworking and loving father and husband. They said he would be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The area where the collision occurred reopened later that evening after debris was cleared and the vehicles were recovered. The Major Collision Investigation Team is asking anyone who witnessed the crashes or has dashcam footage to reach out to them.
