Residents were shocked as police investigated reports of gunfire in Cheetham Hill, with no injuries reported and inquiries ongoing.
Cheetham Hill: On a chilly Saturday morning, police were busy going door-to-door in a quiet cul-de-sac after reports of gunshots rang out.
Greater Manchester Police got the call about a ‘firearms discharge’ on Ermington Drive around 1pm on Friday, January 10.
Specialist officers were on the scene, searching the area close to Salford. By Saturday morning, an operational support van was still there, and detectives were chatting with residents to gather more info.
Thankfully, no one was hurt, according to the police. They haven’t made any arrests yet but are following several leads to figure out what happened.
One local guy mentioned, “I looked out around 3pm and saw all the police. It was just before school pick-up time. The area was taped off, and you couldn’t get through.”
He added, “There were about nine police cars at first. I had no clue what was going on. A neighbor told me they heard three or four gunshots, and they definitely weren’t fireworks. The police are still searching the area.”
Another neighbor, coming home from work, found the road completely blocked off by police tape. “I have no idea what happened; they didn’t say anything. The whole road was shut off,” he said.
Some residents were completely unaware of the situation until they saw the flashing blue lights outside their windows.
Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Det Insp Terina Arthern from the North Manchester district said, “We have extra officers in the area to support the community while we piece together a timeline of events leading to this incident.”
“Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, but the actions of those involved have put the public at risk. Anyone using firearms in our communities will be thoroughly investigated.”
“Rest assured, any information we receive will be treated with the utmost care. If you want to stay anonymous, you can share info by calling Crimestoppers.”
