Her name is Linda De Sousa Abreu, and she’s 30 years old. The whole thing blew up when a video of the incident made its way onto social media. Talk about a major breach of trust!
The police jumped in after they caught wind of the video. In it, you can hear an inmate off-camera saying, “This is how we live at Wandsworth, bruv.” It’s just crazy how things unfolded.
She showed up at Isleworth crown court and got hit with that 15-month sentence. The judge laid it out pretty clearly, saying she was on duty in uniform when she went into a cell with the prisoner. She even put her radio aside, which is a big no-no.
There was another prisoner there with a camera, probably a phone, and he was smoking cannabis too. Instead of stopping him, she just let him record everything. The video lasted about four and a half minutes, and it was pretty explicit.
During the recording, the second prisoner was cheering her on, saying things like, “Guys, we made history.” It’s just mind-boggling how this all went down.
She was charged with misconduct in public office and pleaded guilty last July. The incident happened between June 26 and June 28, and she was arrested at Heathrow while trying to catch a flight to Madrid. She had even told the prison about her travel plans!
HMP Wandsworth has a pretty bad reputation, often called the worst prison in England and Wales. Just last October, two other officers were fired for making jokes about an inmate’s suicide in a WhatsApp group. It’s a tough situation all around.
