Stockton-on-Tees: So, there’s this story about a prison teacher named Kelsey Calvert. She got caught sneaking codeine into the jail for an inmate she was dating. It all came to light when a love letter was found in her bag. Talk about a bad day at work!

She worked at HMP Holme House, a men’s prison, and was there from April to November 2022. One day, she was searched, and that’s when the letter popped up. It hinted at a personal relationship with a prisoner. When questioned, she admitted they had been exchanging love letters.

Kelsey, who’s 28, ended up sobbing in court. The judge gave her an eight-month prison sentence, but it’s suspended for two years. The judge said she was manipulated by a “deeply manipulative criminal.” Ouch!

During the court proceedings, it came out that she brought the codeine, which was prescribed for her dad, because the inmate claimed he needed it for pain. The prosecutor mentioned that she fell for all the “bullshit” he was feeding her.

They found more love letters in both the inmate’s cell and Kelsey’s home. Plus, there were seven phone calls that confirmed they were in a sexual relationship. The inmate even asked her to help him get drugs into the prison to settle a debt. Yikes!

When police interviewed her, Kelsey said she brought the codeine once because the inmate was in pain after a tooth extraction. She was clearly in over her head.

In court, it was said that she felt mortified about what she did and that she was manipulated by someone who pretended to care for her. The judge told her she was groomed from start to finish. Kelsey was also ordered to do 140 hours of unpaid work and 20 days of rehabilitation. It’s a tough lesson learned!
