A report reveals tensions among inmates at HMP Chelmsford due to laundry issues
Apparently, the washing machines broke down back in February. The prison had to send dirty clothes all the way to HMP Ranby, which is over 150 miles away. That’s a long trip for laundry, right?
A spokesperson for the Prison Service said they sorted it out quickly by installing new boilers and washing machines. But the report shows that the inmates were left hanging for months. Some guys on C wing hadn’t even had a kit change in seven weeks!
The report also mentioned that staff weren’t picking up the clean laundry that was sent in. This led to some serious tension among the inmates, with fears of fights breaking out due to the lack of hygiene.
On top of that, there were complaints about cold showers and damp cells, especially in B and C wings. The place was getting a bit grimy with black mould showing up in winter.
And if that wasn’t enough, the guys were missing key football matches because the TV aerials were acting up. It’s tough when you can’t catch the game, right?
The report did give a nod to some improvements at HMP Chelmsford over the last few years, but it also pointed out that there’s still a lot to fix. They suggested that the management set some targets for things like violence and self-harm to help create a better environment. Sounds like a plan!
