A proposal to change parking and traffic flow in Conduit Road aims to reduce congestion and improve access for residents and visitors
Stamford: There’s been a lot of chatter about traffic jams on Conduit Road. People are frustrated with the constant gridlock, especially around the school and sports center.
The main issue? Those parking bays that stretch from the bottom of the road to the entrance of the swimming pool. They allow anyone to park for two hours, which sounds good, but it just adds to the chaos.
Residents with permits can park all day, but that just means more cars are crammed in. A report from a council officer pointed out that the long parking bay creates a real bottleneck. Cars can’t pass each other easily, especially near the sports center.
Some folks suggested getting rid of parking in certain spots, but that idea got a lot of pushback. People worried it would make parking harder for everyone, especially for visitors and delivery drivers.
There were also ideas about making the parking bays just for permit holders or even turning Conduit Road into a one-way street. But, the report noted that while a one-way system might help traffic flow, it could also lead to more cars speeding through and create longer detours for residents.
Plus, the school’s operations are outside the council’s control, which complicates things. The council is set to discuss the original proposal at their meeting on January 13, so it’ll be interesting to see what they decide.
