Renfrewshire Council has decided to quit Twitter/X and switch to Bluesky amid rising concerns over content and platform changes
Renfrewshire: The local council, serving over 180,000 residents, is the first in Scotland to ditch Twitter/X. This move comes as the platform faces growing criticism since Elon Musk took over.
Users have been voicing their frustrations about inappropriate content popping up in their feeds. We’re talking about everything from violent images to hate speech and even some pretty wild conspiracy theories.
Notably, some controversial figures, like Andrew Tate and Tommy Robinson, have been allowed back on the platform, which has raised eyebrows.
Twitter has seen quite a few high-profile exits lately. Big names like The Guardian and even some police departments have left, along with various celebrities and comedians.
Even Stephen King has thrown in the towel, calling the platform ‘toxic’ and saying he’s had enough.
While Renfrewshire Council is stepping away from Twitter/X, it’s unclear if schools in the area will follow suit. A spokesperson mentioned they’re chatting with schools about the decision.
They also said they regularly review how they communicate with the public and decided it was time to move to Bluesky. They want to make sure they’re using the best channels available.
Residents can still keep up with the council on Bluesky and through other channels like local media, emails, and community groups.
