Rochford Council alerts residents to a scam involving a fake event at Mill Hall
Rochford: The council just put out a warning about a scam that’s been making the rounds on social media. Apparently, some posts are claiming there’s a big event at Mill Hall and asking traders for deposits.
But here’s the kicker: the council says there’s no event booked at all. They’re urging everyone to steer clear of anyone asking for money related to this so-called event.
Michael Hoy, the deputy leader of Rochford Council, mentioned they’re aware of these misleading posts. He stressed that it’s a scam and that residents should be careful about sharing personal info or cash with unverified sources.
To keep things legit, the council suggests checking their official website or social media for any real events. Earlier this week, folks started seeing posts looking for stall holders for a weekend event at Mill Hall, which is owned by the council.
Some traders even reached out to the email listed and were asked to pay deposits between £30 and £55. It’s still unclear how many people might have fallen for this.
One local, Karen Smith, was interested in selling her dog treats at this event. She thought it sounded great since she had success at similar events before.
After emailing the poster and filling out a form, she was directed to a PayPal account, which raised some red flags for her. Thankfully, she checked with Mill Hall and found out there was no event happening.
She’s relieved she didn’t send any money and hopes others don’t get caught up in this scam either.
