The RSPCA is set to build a new facility for small animals in Bridlington to address rising abandonment rates
Bridlington: Exciting news for animal lovers! The RSPCA is gearing up to build a new small animal facility just outside the town. This is a big step for the local branch, which has been given the green light to expand their wildlife garden.
The new facility will be a cozy home for cats, rabbits, and other small critters. It’ll include a cattery and a special area for rabbits and similar animals. A spokesperson mentioned that there’s a real need for more space for unwanted and abused animals in the area.
With the cost of living crisis, the number of abandoned pets has shot up by 46%, the highest in the country. Their current cattery is always full, and they often have to send cats to local vets until they can find room.
Local inspectors are reaching out almost daily, asking if there’s space for animals in need. Sadly, cases of cruelty are also on the rise, and some animals have to stay in facilities for over a year while waiting for their court cases.
Right now, the cattery is home to many cats looking for forever homes. Bear, a 10-year-old cat, is one of the recent arrivals, and older pets often take longer to find new families. Then there’s Nala, who came in after a road accident and had surgery on her broken leg. Fingers crossed she heals well!
The RSPCA is also on the lookout for volunteers to help out at their charity shop on Prospect Street. They need friendly faces to assist customers and support the animals in their care. If you’re interested, pop in for a chat and grab an application form!
