A judge warns Rudy Giuliani of possible imprisonment for repeatedly attacking election workers, raising stakes in a defamation case.
Washington DC: So, Rudy Giuliani is in hot water again. A federal judge just told him he might face jail time if he keeps making false claims about two election workers. This all stems from his accusations that they messed with the 2020 election results.
The judge’s warning came after the mother-daughter duo, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, said Giuliani broke a court order by continuing to attack them. They’re trying to collect a hefty $150 million judgment against him, and they’re not backing down.
Giuliani missed a deadline to respond to their complaint and asked for more time, claiming he couldn’t find lawyers willing to take his case. He said they think the judge is biased against him. But the judge wasn’t having it and gave him another chance to respond by January 2.
He’s got a lot on the line, including fines and possibly jail time. The judge made it clear that any more requests for extensions would be met with skepticism. A hearing on this contempt motion is set for January 10.
Last year, a jury hit Giuliani with a massive $148 million judgment after he falsely claimed the women manipulated votes in Georgia. He’s still making wild accusations, saying they “quadruple counted ballots” and messed with voting machines.
In his defense, Giuliani insists he’s just exercising his First Amendment rights by talking about the case. He’s also criticized the women for their legal tactics. It’s a messy situation, and it looks like it’s far from over.
