A vigil for Sara Sharif was held as her grandfather pledges to keep her siblings safe in Pakistan amid ongoing custody battles
Surrey: Sara Sharif’s grandfather is determined to keep her siblings in Pakistan, saying it’s the safest place for them. This comes after a vigil was held for the 10-year-old girl who was tragically murdered.
Muhammad Sharif plans to appeal to the high court in Pakistan to prevent the return of Sara’s five siblings to the UK. He believes they are better off with him.
During the vigil, which took place outside Sara’s home, many people gathered to remember her. It was a heartfelt event, with candles and roses laid in her memory.
Local MP Will Forster mentioned how the community is heartbroken over Sara’s loss. Her siblings are currently in Jhelum, Pakistan, and there are ongoing efforts to bring them back to the UK.
They were taken by their stepmother and uncle shortly before Sara’s body was found. After being discovered by police, the children were placed in state care but are now back with their grandfather.
Muhammad Sharif shared that the custody case is still in progress, and he’s committed to their safety. He’s even personally taking them to school to ensure they’re protected.
Meanwhile, Sara’s father and stepmother were recently convicted of her murder, while her uncle was found guilty of allowing her death. The legal situation surrounding the siblings is quite complicated.
Surrey County Council is working to bring the children back to the UK, but it’s uncertain if the Pakistani court will allow it. The next hearing is set for mid-January.
In the meantime, the council is focused on the children’s wellbeing and is asking for privacy during this difficult time. Sentencing for those convicted is scheduled for Tuesday.
