A woman suffered a heart attack and multi-organ failure after sauna use, prompting health experts to stress the importance of hydration.
Birmingham: So, there was this woman in her 70s who had a pretty scary experience at her local gym’s sauna. She ended up having a heart attack after getting heat stroke. Yikes!
Doctors from Birmingham Heartlands Hospital said she was out cold for a while before they found her. She had been doing some stretching for about 45 minutes before hitting the sauna.
When paramedics arrived, her body temperature was super high—like 42 degrees Celsius! Her blood pressure was really low, and her heart was racing. Not good at all.
This woman had a history of type 1 diabetes and thyroid issues, which probably didn’t help. She was taken to the emergency room, where she was unresponsive and even had a seizure.
After a couple of hours of cooling down, she woke up but was still a bit confused for a couple of days. Fast forward 26 days later, and she was back to her usual self, though still feeling a bit tired.
She shared her story, saying it really hit home how crucial it is to stay hydrated before using a sauna. She used to go all the time without any problems, but now she realizes she wasn’t drinking enough water.
Thankfully, she’s feeling much better now and is grateful to the medical team for their help. It’s a reminder for all of us to drink up before we sweat it out!
