Protesters rally to save rural libraries from closure amid budget cuts
Perth: A group of passionate protesters from the ‘Save Our Rural Libraries’ campaign is gearing up for a big demonstration outside Perth Museum this Saturday. They’re rallying to protect local libraries from potential closures due to budget cuts.
These cuts are part of a plan by Culture Perth and Kinross, which manages the new £27 million museum. The protesters come from communities like Auchterarder, Birnam, Comrie, and Scone, all united under the same cause.
They’re calling on everyone to join in, warning that “your library could be next.” Culture Perth and Kinross has been looking into different ways to keep library services running, like click and collect options or letting local groups take over.
But many folks believe losing library buildings would hurt vulnerable people in the community. Sam Eskenazi from Scone is encouraging everyone to show up and support the cause. He mentioned that people from various communities, even a choir from Comrie, will be there.
Politicians are also set to speak, and there will be activities for people to make their own placards. Sam hopes that even those who think their libraries are safe will come out to support the campaign. He pointed out that hours are already being cut at the AK Bell Library in Perth.
It’s not just about their libraries; it could affect others too. Culture Perth and Kinross is under pressure to cut its budget by 12% over the next three years, and they’re reviewing library services as part of that process.
The campaigners argue that the consultation process has been flawed, only reaching out to “active borrowers” instead of the wider community who use libraries for various reasons, like job searching or finding a warm space.
Helen Smout, the chief executive of Culture Perth and Kinross, has warned that even libraries that don’t close will likely see cuts to their opening hours. It’s a tough situation, especially since Perth and Kinross spends less on libraries compared to other areas, despite having a high usage rate.
The protest kicks off at 11 am outside Perth Museum, and it’s shaping up to be a lively event!
