John Swinney expresses condolences to Alistair Wilson’s family amid ongoing investigation into his murder.
He had promised to meet Veronica, Alistair’s widow, and their son Andrew after being urged by Highland MSP Douglas Ross. The family has been really frustrated with how the investigations have gone so far. Swinney acknowledged that while he wants to help, there are limits to what he can do since it’s an active police case.
After their private meeting, he expressed his heartfelt sympathies to Mrs. Wilson and her family. He appreciated them taking the time to talk with him. He recognized the unimaginable pain they’ve been through, especially knowing that Alistair’s killer is still out there.
In September, the top law officer in Scotland ordered a fresh look into the case with a new team of police and prosecutors. The Chief Constable of Police Scotland, Jo Farrell, has said they are determined to solve the murder, but the Wilson family has raised concerns about her leadership.
Recently, it came to light that a senior officer from the original investigation was found guilty of misconduct for misleading the family about the case. This has only added to the family’s frustration, especially since the Chief Constable has refused to meet with them, which Mrs. Wilson found quite insulting.
Douglas Ross welcomed Swinney’s meeting with the family, calling it a positive step. He pointed out that while the First Minister can’t directly influence the investigation, his willingness to listen is a good sign. The family has shown incredible strength over the years, and many hope that justice will finally be served for Alistair Wilson. Police Scotland has been asked for comments on the situation.
