Highland rail services faced major disruptions due to extreme cold, affecting multiple trains on the Far North Line
The Met Office even reported -17C in Altnaharra the night before, and it got even colder on Saturday morning. This severe cold caused some serious issues on the Far North Line.
At Lairg station, the level crossing barriers just wouldn’t budge in the freezing temps. This led to the 6.18am Wick to Inverness train getting stuck there, already an hour late. The 7am Inverness to Wick train also had to stop at Lairg because of the same problem.
To help out, they started running extra services for passengers heading south. But the delays didn’t stop there. The 8.02am Wick to Inverness train was also held up at Rogart, waiting for the cancelled service to make its way back.
Other trains weren’t spared either. The 9.46am Inverness to Elgin and the 10.51am Elgin to Inverness were both cancelled due to a signaling issue.
It’s a tough time for everyone relying on these services, and we appreciate the patience of all the passengers affected. Remember, local journalism is here to keep you informed, and your support makes a difference!
